Ballerina
Inspired by “Ballerina di 14 anni” by Edgar Degas, our ballerina has come to life on multiple layers of gauze/tulle.
The fabric is inspired by the softness of the ballerina’s skirt, and with multiple sheer sheets, capturing the various “generations” of multiple projected sources, the result is a ghost like layering of dancers.
We have used a proximity sensor to freeze her motion when viewers come too near, as if she dances when the museum is closed, when no one is looking, and becomes a statue once again when someone is looking.
With more time, we plan to continue to work the potential of interactivity, and refining the sensor input and, as well as add more layers of fabric and more projectors - either in a row, like dominoes, where the dancers over lap, or hung around a room, creating a maze of sheer drapes and ballerinas and move and pose as you travel through, and come near them.
